A Sauvignon Blanc from what is recognised as the best producer in the Loire Valley. Since iconic winemaker Didier Dagueneau died unexpectedly in 2008, interest in this iconic Domaine has only increased – his son Louis Benjamin taking the label forward. ‘Pur Sang’ translates to ‘thoroughbred’ in French, and this Sauvignon Blanc is regarded as a benchmark in the world of wine.
A pale straw colour in the glass. Perfumed with lemon, blackcurrant, lychee, mandarin peel, and nectarine, there is also a drying, resinous eucalypt note that adds an interesting astringency to the nose, balancing the fruit intensity. A confident tension into the palate – concentrated and structured. A thread of chalky minerality to the acidity – briney and sapid. Balancing that is a note of exotic spice that emerges, with jalapeno, dried pineapple and oatmeal. Richly layered and complex, this wine would benefit from a longer ageing and cellaring to be at peak drinking. Still bloody good now. 95pts
