A single vineyard expression (and barrel selection) from the Defiance vineyard on Felton Road in Bannockburn. A dense ruby colour in the glass. A savoury style, with that pop of juicy Central Otago fruit – cherry, red plum and raspberry – bolstered with mocha, liquorice and ‘sous bois’ notes. Quite plush on the palate, with a richness to the texture that reflects the glossy fruit flavours. Tannins are quite fine, and there is a busy rush of acidity that keeps things moving. I like the way that the oak is used here – well-articulated and integrated, but adding a smokiness and seasoning. The finish is sleek and long. 93pts
