From the Karikari Peninsula in Northland – the country’s most northerly winery, and a relatively unusual variety – a Pinotage. A deep, dark burgundy purple in the glass – with flashes of magenta at the rim. A big perfume, rushing from the glass with black plum, blackberry, woodsmoke, blueberry, clove, cacao and kirsch. Robust, youthful and full-bodied. Drying, chewy tannins meets juicy ripeness and a toasty oak richness, but with the acidity being crisp and flowing, the wine unfolds and flows quite well. Savoury notes deepen further in – expect some nori, sumac and olive flavours. The finish is sweetening and with good length. 92pts
