Fruit from the Te Makiri Road vineyard, in Waiheke Island’s Onetangi Valley. A site that is warm, with free-draining soils and long autumn ripening which suits the late-ripening Montepulciano, helping achieve full phenolic maturity while retaining freshness. Under screw cap. Medium to pale ruby in colour. The aromatic profile is of dried meat, black fruit, and bracken as well as tea leaves. A dry palate shows tannins are medium with quite intense fruit – flavours of blackberry and plum plus dried marjoram. Good, lifted acidity. Medium length finish. Drinking well now – a good, versatile all rounder. 88pts
