Smith & Sheth CRU Heretaunga Cabernet Franc 2019

Smith & Sheth CRU Heretaunga Cabernet Franc 2019

Made with fruit from 25+ year old vines from the Howell Vineyard in the Bridge Pa sub-region of Hawke’s Bay, which has a silty, clay soil over free draining red metal gravels soil profile. 100% hand harvested. Gentle destemming to leave a large % of whole berries in the fermentation. No fining. Under screwcap. Medium ruby core with pale ruby on the rim in the glass. Lifted aromas of red fruit – red cherry, redcurrant, raspberry & red liquorice is the standout aspect of this wine. Medium tannins with a medium weight and intensity of fruit – reflecting the once-daily 100% pump over during fermentation to aid in gentle tannin extraction followed by 16 months in barrel. Flavours of red cherry and redcurrant reflect the bouquet. Round and supple acidity. Despite the 13.5% alcohol it is very light on its feet. Simple, easy drinking and good value wine – especially when you factor in the obvious quality. Drinking well now and while no rush, I would see this as a wine to enjoy relatively young. 92pts
