A Chardonnay from the excellent Margaret River sub-region of Wilyabrup in Western Australia (home to Vasse Felix, Pierro, Cullen and more). Distinctively “Australian” on the nose, with its aromas of green apple, lemon rind and minerality. There is also a little reductivity, bringing a struck match note on top of the fruit notes. The palate broadens, with cashew nut, white peach and vanilla widening the flavour spectrum. Keen acid will be a feature of current styles of good Chardonnay from the west island, and it features here – offering energy and drive. Some phenolics, tannin and more stony earthy elements add complexity, and linger into the finish – dry, zesty and long. 94pts
