Described as being drawn from ‘selected sites from Hawke’s Bay’ and a ‘classic Hawke’s Bay summer’ for the vintage. In a good year, Merlot from the region is excellent, and this wine is a recent Trophy and Double Gold medal winner at NZIWS. A dense black-red colour, with a perfume that is spot on in terms of varietal typicity. Doris plum, black and blue berries, redcurrant, mocha and liquorice sit alongside a medicinal herbal note and a dab of toasty spice. The palate is glossy and succulent – fruit-forward but with a firm spine of tannin, oak and acidity in balance at the core. Not an overly complicated wine, but I could see a little secondary flavour developing with some age. A fine example. 93pts
