One of the Maude single-vineyard expressions of Pinot Noir – from Lowburn, adjacent to Lake Dunstan, by the Mohawk Hill (named by the workers who came to Central Otago to build the Clyde Dam). A bright, dark ruby colour in the glass. The bouquet is quite spice-driven, with star anise, cinnamon and cloves, and rich raspberry, bramble and red cherry fruits. Concentrated and plush on the palate, with smoky, savoury notes as a counterpoint to the sweet fruit. A good core of structure to this young wine, boding well for the future, with grippy tannin, toasty oak and juicy acidity working in tandem. The finish is rounder, with a good persistence. 93pts
