In what has been a ‘summer of rosé’ this time around – this category is still seeing more demand, even after the recent year-on-year growth in the style. When I last judged the category at the New Zealand International Wine Show it was interesting to see just how much producers have fallen into line with not just colour – that pale copper-salmon pink pioneered by Provence – but also in style – with lip-smackingly dry expressions certainly in favour. I was keen, then, to try a version by one of our most respected producers.
A blend of Pinot Noir, Merlot and Syrah with a small portion of Malbec are used to create this pale coral-pink expression of Rosé. Perfumes of watermelon, strawberry, red apple and cherry on the nose. Dry, with a ringing acidity that gives intensity and line through the palate. Savoury notes start to emerge and mingle with the juicy summer berry notes – chamomile, charcuterie, tapenade and white pepper. Perfect for food matching around the summer table. Finishes tight, bright and more-ish. 91pts
