A wine that Saint Clair Senior Winemaker, Kyle Thompson describes as “made from a special little parcel of Pinot Noir grown in the Omaka Valley which always produces elegant, perfumed Pinot Noir.” Winner of a Gold Medal at both the New Zealand International Wine Show, and the National Wine Awards of Aotearoa New Zealand; the wine also won its class to be ‘Champion Pinot Noir’, and won ‘Champion Wine of the Show’ at the National Wine Awards of Aotearoa New Zealand.
A medium-density lighter ruby colour in the glass. It has that ‘modern style’ on the nose ( a bit less extraction, a bit more perfume and delicacy) – with a creamy strawberry, crunchy cranberry, blood orange and redcurrant fruit overlaid with spice, cinnamon, sumac, dried peel and fresh green notes of herbs and moss. The palate offers more pop of fruit, with some delicious tangy berries and currants. A creamy lactic element persists from the nose, offering freshness and lift. Acidity is key here, with the tannin very fine and understudying the lead role. A little sweetness of mocha is tempered by a salty dutch liquorice note. Very characterful wine. I like it. 94pts
