Mayer Sangiovese 2022

A Yarra Valley wine – sourced during a recent visit to Timo Mayer’s property at Bloody Hill. The grapes are from Dixon’s Creek, and the winemaking is, of course, 100% whole bunch. A bright medium-ruby red in the glass – maybe lighter than you might expect – but with an electricity to the perfume that sets the tone. Cherry, cassis, thyme, incense sticks, cranberry and damson plum. Juicy and generous on the palate, with an intensity that is quite jazzy. Savoury notes of tomato leaf, sumac and olive appear. Tannin is grippy but well-balanced – fine, chalky and dry and there is a line of acidity that gives a lovely shine to the wine and lots of drive. 93pts
