A wine from the Bridge Pa sub-region of Hawke’s Bay – becoming known as one of the best areas for this variety in New Zealand. A dense garnet-red in the glass, with an equally robust perfume of black plum, menthol, blueberry, violets, nori, white pepper, bramble and cloves. The array of Middle Eastern spices gathers pace on the palate, infusing the succulent fruit flavours. Oak lends a charry nuance, and tannins are pervasive but well integrated in support. A nibble of savoury umami returns, echoing the nose, and leads to a dry, peaty finish. About at its best right now – this wasn’t as good on day 2, so if you have it, drink now. 90pts
