A Waiheke Island wine – from a great vintage, with some bottle age. Deep ruby with some lighter, brick red at the edges. Intensely aromatic with blueberry, cassis, plum and vanilla, and a delicate note of violets. Medium-bodied and finely balanced with dense, dark fruit flavours as a counterpoint to that seductive and floral nose. The palate is more robust, with bramble, liquorice and spiced with white pepper. Layered over the toasty oak is also a savoury edge of smoked meat, olive and chamomile. Tannins are silky, and the texture is smooth, rounded with sweeter characters of chocolate and caramel coming through. Persistent finish – drinking very well at this stage of its development. 94pts.
