A Hawke’s Bay wine, fruit from the Chalk Ridge block, just to the south of Havelock North, a portion of whole bunches of viognier added. Inky dark burgundy – glossy with purple rim. Boldly aromatic, with bramble, dark plum, mandarin peel, white pepper and violet florals. Medium to full-bodied, with grippy but ripe tannins, and a well-structured density. An interesting balance and tension between restraint and elegance, and the plush, bold fruit and savoury layers. A layer of mineral, oyster-shell tang comes through under the fruit, mingling with richer notes like a smoked meat, tapenade and leather. Finish is silken, long and satisfying. 94pts.
