‘Latitude 41’ by Spencer Hill – Moutere Chardonnay 2019

From the Upper Moutere near Nelson, comes this Chardonnay from the lauded 2019 vintage. Brilliant lemon-yellow with light green edges. Aromas of vanilla, lemon zest, nectarine and flinty, smoky reductiveness come bursting from the glass. Rich and full on the palate, with peach, pear, grapefruit and riper tropical notes of honeydew melon. Lots of spice – ginger, cinnamon and mustard seed.

Enriched with some noticeable oak influence, showing toasted marshmallow and oat biscuit. The texture is rounded and lush (full MLF) with flavours of lemon curd and popcorn blooming at the back of the palate. A long, sweet and creamy finish. 92pts. A generous wine, with a nod to the old school, plump, opulent chardonnays of a decade ago (and still a popular style).
