A Wairarapa Pinot Noir, from chosen blocks in the Matahiwi Estate vineyard. A dark, slightly opaque, maroon in the glass, with an effusive perfume of black cherry, pomegranate, hay, damp leaves and a little floral lift of spring blossom. Medium bodied and with an integrated acidity that allows the ripeness to shine on the palate. A melange of dark, blue and red fruits – damson, redcurrant and blueberry are underlined with a spiciness and herbal notes of anise, fennel and cloves.
A youthful bounce, but although delicate and ethereal, it has good depth and complexity to the layers of flavour. Tannins are supple and already in balance, as is the subtle framing of oak. A silken texture envelops the finish of this wine, and leaves a lingering, savoury sensation. 94pts. A marvellous North island Pinot, and, on sale at $30 as I write, which represents quite fantastic value.
