Now open on West St in Greytown – one back from the main street, is the cool little ‘Urban Winery’ housing the endeavours of Lesley and Jane, under the Alexia wine label. Open for tasting and sales during summer 11am – 4pm Friday – Sunday, or by appointment. You can park your car or bike onsite, or enjoy the short walk from the centre of Greytown. The winery is a cool space. Polished concrete, blond wood, retro chairs – and obviously as much a working space as a welcoming one – one of those magical egg-shaped fermenters sits looking intergalactic in one corner.
I visited on the opening day last Friday, and spend a decent half an hour chatting through the range and tasting the wares. As readers will recognise – the ‘Happy Wife’ Chardonnay came from out of left field to finish in the top 5 of the WineFolio Top 10 tasting. It’s a sensational wine – tried again this week, it brought back the memories of last September, and the comments of one judge – “I love this”!!
The rosé is everything you’d want – from Pinot Noir, it’s ethereal, dry with a darling sweet/savoury character and just so drinkable. You’ll want to get hold of the Pinot Noir too – another wine brimming with personality: lots of whole-bunch interest, ripe brambly, damson fruit and fine, tannic backbone.
I bought a swag of bottles – see photo! Well, it’s nearly Christmas.
