2013 was an exceptionally strong vintage in the Hawke’s Bay and this wine was selected as part of the Gimblett Gravels Growers Association ‘Annual Vintage Selection’ where a dozen wines are chosen independently by Andrew Caillard MW of Sydney, from wines submitted for blind tasting, to represent the best of the district for that given year.
It is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 15% Malbec from the ‘Cornerstone’ vineyard, fermented to 13.5% and was aged for 20 months in 30% new French oak. Under screw cap. Colour profile is of a deep opaque ruby with little signs of ageing. Unyielding on the nose, with tight black fruit. Firm, grippy tannins. Concentrated, dense black fruit and espresso notes persist and despite significant decanting it is still very closed. Suggest needs significantly more time to open up. 90pts (based on drinking now with significant upside to come).
