From the pioneer of wine growing in the region. Hermann Seifried, an Austrian winemaker married South Island girl, Agnes; and in 1973, they purchased land in the Moutere Valley, where they planted the region’s first vineyard. Hermann and Agnes grafted, planted and tended their first grapes, experimenting with European varieties in the untested climate. In 1976, Hermann and Agnes produced their first vintage, featuring five distinct varietal wines.
This Riesling comes in at 25 years old – but if you head to their website, there are ‘Cellar release’ Rieslings from the 2008 or 2011 vintages currently on release… so this review does have relevance!
Under screw cap, it is a bold and vibrant green-gold colour in the glass – showing its age. Varietally precise aromas of lime, green apple, kumquat, citrus peel have enough freshness and vim to meld well with warmer, spicy notes of nutmeg, salted caramel, almond and dried apricot. The palate is plush and rich with more dried fruits, popcorn and muesli, carried along on still-kicking acidity. Off-dry, but finishing with a lovely pithy brightness and clarity. Has aged beautifully. 93pts
