A Pinot Noir from the Upper Awatere Valley in Marlborough. Unfiltered, it is a medium-density bright ruby colour in the glass. Beautifully aromatic, quite dark and brooding on the nose, with plenty of Pinot Noir typicity. Black cherry is the main fruit aroma, but there’s lots to take in, with plum, blueberry and rose petals. Acidity is plentiful too – and at nine years old, that is a good thing. Tannin has a little grip and there is a hint of savoury complexity beginning to develop, with toasted spice and a mocha note in there somewhere too. Well-rounded at the end, with a silky finish of good length. Still plenty of life in this – no rush if you have a few in the cellar. 93pts
