Dedicated to the producer’s Grandmother Doris, this red wine is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec from Hawke’s Bay. A garnet red in the glass, with a smoky, spicy bouquet. Elderberry, raspberry, damson plum and exotic florals of orchid and violets. Also some spice on the nose that follows through to the palate. Serious tannins lies in wait, but there is also a suppleness and length to them that gives a very stylish elegance to the spine. Juicy and plush, yet with some green herb and pot pourri notes that both add an edge of complexity. A lot going on, with a lot of energy too – I’m thinking that this will reward some cellaring and show more finesse in a few years. For now, 90pts
