A wine from Wrights in Gisborne, tasted on my recent visit. A pale medium-garnet/red colour in the glass. The nose is soft and fruity – almost Australian in style – with ripe boysenberry, cherry and toasted spice. In contrast the palate is dry, peppery and savoury, showing firm tannins. There are savoury notes of soy and baked earth and quite a tart bite through the mid-palate that contrasts well with the sweetness in the bouquet. Add in some dried herbal notes and the dry tightness to finish, and this is quite a journey. Would go very well with a Sunday roast. 90pts
