The vineyard for this wine is in the Gladstone area of Wairarapa, but you’ll find the Schubert Cellar Door in Martinborough. A vibrant magenta/burgundy colour in the glass. The bouquet is bold and inviting, with a smoky start redolent of salami, rare steak and roasted spice. The fruits are in the blue to black spectrum, with blueberry, plum, cherry and bramble. The palate shows a masterful hand with oak – it frames the juiciness beautifully, but is just one layer of many in the complex maze. Whisper fine tannins sit amongst the silky texture, and acidity gives the fruit a nudge along, to a spicy, persistent finish. 95pts
