The top level Chardonnay from this producer based in Te Awanga, Hawke’s Bay. Area bright green-gold colour in the glass. The bouquet is complex and subtle, with a blend of grapefruit, peach, acacia wood, fennel, lemon peel, apple, cashew nut and smoky spices. Full-bodied with some weight and opulence evident on the entry. The oak is well-judged and toasty, adding depth and a frame to the juicy fruit. Acidity adds energy to that spine and there’s no lack of power and intensity. A richer side emerges with a viscose texture, which aligns well with the spice and a mealy quality, filling the back of the palate. No rush to open this – keep for another five years at least. 94pts
