A wine from Victoria, Australia – Mitchelton is in the Nagambie region, about an hour and a half drive north of Melbourne. An opaque burgundy-red in the glass. A voluptuous scent, with some funk and smoke overlaid on the ripe fruits. Tertiary notes of incense, forest floor, old leather and soy all emerge (it is a thirty year-old bottle) alongside the red plum, bramble and cherry. The palate is super smooth, and thankfully plenty of lusty acidity remains, carrying the juicy flavours along. Tannin is subdued now, but there is a subtle black tea note, over the toast of the oak. Savoury elements of tar, tapenade and autumn leaf shuffle the fruit out of the way, and the finish is a little dry, but has good persistence. 93pts
