Topsy Turvey Chardonnay 2021

A return to taste a wine that I’ve reviewed and enjoyed since release. Topsy Turvey is the personal ‘family project’ that Tim Turvey (of Clearview Estate) makes with daughters Katie and Gemma at Te Awanga in Hawke’s Bay. A vibrant green-golden colour in the glass. The perfume has a pedal-to-the-floor intensity and boldness. A mixture of stonefruit and citrus aromas, with cashew nut, brioche, cardamom spice and honeysuckle florals. Dry, but with a generous slice of, well, everything going on in the palate. There is no shortage of character here – power-packed, energetic and complex. An old-school, spicy oak suits the persona, with the ripe fruit just eating it up. There’s butterscotch, unfolding spice and a silken creaminess. As much as it is opulent, the finish has a delicately pithy dryness that adds to the sumptuous length. 95pts
