Kemp Road ‘Whenua’ 2019

A Hawke’s Bay wine from the Gimblett Gravels sub-region – a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. The perfume is well-developed already for a four year old wine. This was a great vintage for Hawke’s Bay. Blackcurrant, damson and mulberry fruit flavours sit alongside vanilla, menthol, bay leaf and cedary oak on the nose. Medium-bodied, with some grip and structure from the tannin and a nice rasp of acidity gives the palate freshness and length. An earthy element with a meaty, leather note also adds complexity. The finish is better than the entry, with an embracing, lengthy finale. 92pts
