A wine from the new Ayrburn label in Central Otago – this is the wine that won Gold at NZIWS and I tried at a dinner after a day’s judging last year. A deep burgundy/ruby colour in the glass. Good typicity for the region, with black cherry, damson, cinnamon, thyme and bramble, plus a distinctive spice and floral top note in the perfume. Armed with a fresh acidity that pushes the fruit forward, the palate also shows just enough toast of oak for depth and roundness. A plush and textural mouthfeel adds balance, richness and coats the tastebuds. Good persistence in the dry finish. 93pts
