From Puriri Hills in Clevedon, Auckland – a red blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet franc, Carmenère and Malbec. It feels very Merlot-heavy, with the plum fruits and medicinal tang typical of the variety – the Cabernets adding weight, tannin and complexity to the blend. Not heavy, although there is good body and depth. Anise, cassis, damson, lavender, cherry, salami, leather, mint and blood orange combine seamlessly, driven by a saline acidity. The tannin is fine, rasping across the palate. Oak is subtle and adds seasoning to a savoury, earthy edge around the ripe fruits (2019 was a super vintage). Finishes long and delicate. 93pts
