This is the second time that Coal Pit have released their Bendigo Pinot Noir – looking beyond their home in Gibbston, with a different expression of Central Otago Pinot. The ‘Tiwha’ cuvée was number 2 in the recent Winefolio Top Tasting of Pinot Noir – a label to watch out for!
A bright mid-density purple in the glass. Richly perfumed with root beer, dark cherry, chorizo, wood smoke, plum and top notes of rose petal and roasted spices. The palate is juicy, with a sappy acidity and a delicious crunch of ripe red berries. Tannin is highlighted by whole-bunch winemaking – grippy, savoury and firm. Complex and layered as you go, discovering notes of soy and tapenade umami, salted caramel, incense and baking spices. A generous texture swaddles the palate as the various components come together. Good length on the finish. 94pts
