Mumm Central Otago Blanc de Noirs NV

Mumm Central Otago Blanc de Noirs NV

The second instalment in the G. H. Mumm champagne house ‘Terroirs’ collection, and collaboration with Pernod Ricard Winemakers, featuring wine regions (in New Zealand) that produce fine Pinot Noir, and therefore are of interest to produce sparkling wine. The first release was Mumm Marlborough Brut Prestige, in 2020 – some 200 years after G. H. Mumm started to produce fine sparkling wines; and last year they showcased Mumm Tasmania Brut Prestige to the world. Of course, these wines are created using the ‘méthode traditionnelle’ – the same way that great Champagne is made.

A bright lemon-straw colour in the glass, with a very fine, persistent, bead of bubbles. The perfume starts with citrus peel, yellow plum and cherry, moving to a baguette crumb and nougat toastiness, and then with a final flourish of jasmine and orange blossom. The palate is fresh, with both delicacy and depth. Threaded with a zesty acidity, the fruit is juicy and notes of nutmeg and allspice show as layers open up. The balance is very well judged – with the energy from that acidity in harmony with a chalky minerality and a creamy, silken texture. A calm, well-crafted and elegant drop. 94pts
