A wine from the Gimblett Gravels in Hawke’s Bay, and the winner of the Trophy for ‘Other Red Varieties’ at The National Wine Awards Aotearoa this year. A dark garnet in the glass. Aromatic and smoky, with savoury herbal and dried spice notes above blackberry, plum, cherry, dark chocolate and violets. Rich and broad on the plate – a mix of sweet fruit plus dark, savoury notes of leather, nori and forest floor. The spine comes in the form of burly, grippy tannins and integrated acidity. It has excellent varietal character, with the finish bringing those elements together, with good persistence. 93pts
