A Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon blend from One Tree Hill – the Mount Lofty Ranges in South Australia. A dense dark purple-black in the glass. Blackberry, vanilla, cacao nib, cassis, damson, allspice, nutmeg and violet florals. The initial impression into the palate is of a slightly sweet-fruited red monster of a wine, but stay with it…and those juicy dark berries and liquorice notes give way to savoury notes of leather and graphite. Rich and plush, with smooth tannins and a frame of smoky oak. This won a Gold Medal at NZIWS this year, and it ‘does what it says on the tin’ – a confident, expressive, peacock of a wine that will undoubtedly have its fans. The finish is long and weighty. 93pts
