A deep inky burgundy, browning at the edges in the glass, quite leggy. A nose of deep rich plum and brambles, and a waft of violet florals. Full bodied, through a palate of herbs, spice and cherry-studded fruitcake. It’s already tasting like a well-aged wine – the tannins very smooth and the acidity dropping off. An almost savoury layer of tar and liquorice lies above some mellow cedar texture. The finish is drying and a little sweetness helps it linger on.

It’s not a label I know much about, but I heard that this was their first wine, and it is made by Rod McDonald from Gimblett Gravels fruit. Possibly one to watch?
