An Italian varietal that has found a home in the Gimblett Gravels of Hawke’s Bay – winner of the Trophy for Champion International Red Wine Varieties at the NZIWS this year. An inky, dark burgundy in the glass. Initially a bit shy on the nose – dark cherry, crushed green herbs, liquorice, boysenberry and lilac florals. Comes alive on the palate. There’s a smooth texture but a crunch of sharp, juicy black fruit. Redcurrant, blueberry, spices, peppered salami and roasted meat. A nice rasp of tannin contrasts the plushness well, and leads to a lengthy, dry finish. 93pts
