A Gimblett Gravels wine, from Hawke’s Bay. A dark crimson brooding colour in the glass. Complex and enticing aromatics, filled with tart cherry, tobacco, boysenberry, plum, barnyard funk, and raspberry. A smooth texture greets the palate, where the sweet fruits are framed with a lick of toasty oak. Quite firm and elegant, the succulence is tempered by a note of green astringency – nettle and fennel. The tannin is also quite solid, with a minerality and chalkiness. Although a little disjointed right now, I’d say this shows good potential for the long haul. 90pts
