From a block of Shiraz, planted at Yarra Yering (in the Yarra Valley) in 1973. A deep red-purple colour in the glass. Very aromatic perfume, speaking of plenty of whole-bunch winemaking detail, and showing red peppercorn, iron earth, liquorice and soy alongside some deliciously ripe cherry, plum, blood orange and blueberry fruits. A hint of reductive smokiness and flint lingers. Medium bodied and intense – tight and concentrated on the palate. An incense/cedar/sandalwood note sneaks underneath the plush fruit, merging with some very fine, chalky tannins to give great structure. Despite such elegance it also has great energy and bounces along the palate, diving into a long, lingering finish – drinking well already. 95pts
