The Landing Madre Chardonnay 2020

The Landing Madre Chardy 2020

From the new icon selection of wines from The Landing. The Syrah was reviewed before my trip to Australia – here – www.winefolio.co.nz/?p=8284 and now I find time to delve into the Chardonnay.

Sourced from an excellent vintage (and the COVID-affected harvest of course) at the immaculate Estate vineyards on the Pureora Peninsula in the Bay of Islands. A pale straw colour in the glass. A restrained fragrance that shows a smoky, gunflint edge hovering above rich notes of nectarine, lemon curd, oatmeal and grapefruit. Dry, tightly bound and tense, with layers of complexity that slowly unwind in the glass. I’d recommend decanting this at this youthful stage to see the best of it. The fruit continues working on the stonefruit and citrus theme – accented with a gentle baking spice, and whilst biding its time to find full resolution, the core of saline acidity and framing of toasty oak suggest it will get there. It already has a silky texture and a strong, long finish – just give it time. 94pts
