From the Gimblett Gravels sub-region of Hawke’s Bay – a frequent award-winner and a wine I’ve enjoyed over the years. A dense garnet-purple in the glass, with vividly ripe aromas of damson, raspberry, star anise, mocha, red cherry, white pepper and violets. Medium bodied, but bold and concentrated with those plush fruit flavours to the fore. A lovely balance and agility from the acidity, the supple, spicy tannins and some iron-earth savoury minerality that form a tight core, and give lovely line and flow to the palate. There’s plenty going on here – complex and packed with character. Drinking well now as a young wine, or should keep well for up to ten years. 93pts
