From their vineyard in Gibbston Valley, Central Otago – a great chance to look at how one of the wines from this producer is looking after a dozen years slumbering away in the cellar.
A dense burgundy-red, with just a touch of browning to the edges. A savoury note on the nose, akin to forest floor, with dried leaves, loam and herbs. This mixed with a dark cherry, rosehip, raspberry and plum. Elegantly balanced with a delicate entwining of fine tannin, moderate acidity and concentrated, pure fruit flavours. Some layers of roasted spice, more thyme and then a nibble of toasty oak emerge as this wine slowly unfurls itself from rest. As savoury as it is sweet and ripe – you keep returning to that peaty minerality that underlines the palate. Finished dry, with great persistence. 95pts
