From the ‘Immigrant’s Vineyard’ in the Alexandra Basin sub-region of Central Otago. A dark ruby in the glass, and with a perfume that immediately says ‘Central Otago Pinot’. A vibrant nose brims with black cherry, elderberry and damson, overlaid with baking spice and a dry stoney-earthy minerality. Concentrated and powerful, with a taut balance between acidity and firm, dry tannin and the ripe, sweet fruit and savoury, umami notes of truffle, olive and black tea. Oak is apparent but not obtrusive, just adding to the complexity and personality – of which there is plenty on show. Quite seamless, with a long, spiced finish. This is quite a find – for me, a new label and one to watch. 94pts
