A dense ruby-purple colour in the glass. Varietally pure aromatics, with black cherry, bramble, raspberry, cinnamon, hazelnut, damson plum and a lift of violet florals on the nose. The core forms around a mixture of fine, silken tannin and a peppery spice that speaks of some whole-bunch complexity in the winemaking. A sense of place pervades the palate – thyme, intense juicy fruit, and a warm-stone minerality. Acidity is well balanced to the glossy ripeness, and the toasty oak adds richness to this weighty, classic expression of Central Pinot. Mocha, baking spice, sumac and a little dark liquorice linger in the finish – long and sweetening. Such balance and poise – this could be one for the cellar, to be explored after a decade or so. 95pts
