A ‘right-bank’ style blend of Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon from Hawke’s Bay, and a great vintage. A dark purple-tinged ruby in the glass. Youthful and energetic on the nose, with opulent aromatics of plum, tobacco, mushroom, blackcurrant, chorizo, graphite and a floral lift of violets. Good finesse and complexity on the palate, with a lovely sweep of acidity and robust but detailed, fine tannins. Plush, sweet-fruited with cassis and cherry emerging, above layers of roasted spice, tapenade and liquorice. Beautifully smooth and concentrated on the lengthy finish. Very appealing already, but with a structure and spine that suggests an ageing ability of ten years plus. 94pts
