The Trophy-winning Pinot Gris at the recent NZIWS, made from Hawke’s bay fruit at Askerne vineyard. Partially (20%) fermented in barrel. A pale lemon-straw colour in the glass. Bright and intensely aromatic with satsuma, nashi pear, nectarine, lemon peel and honeysuckle on the nose. A good balance of acidity and waxy texture is apparent as you dive into the palate of ripe stonefruits, grilled grapefruit and cantaloupe melon. Spicy and herbal, with pink peppercorn, nutmeg and tarragon notes. The texture is simply unctuous, enveloping and silken. A fair whack of alcohol – 14% – gives warmth too, as the long, sweet finish flows through. Lovely style, generous and rich. 93pts.
