From the North Canterbury vineyards oldest ungrafted vines, made in exceptional years. A deep, ruby burgundy in the glass; with an elegant nose of plum, redcurrant, thyme, rosehip, black cherry, nettle and a spring flower lift. Toasted spices of cinnamon, cardamom and cloves, with smoked salami and mushroom savoury notes. Beautiful harmony – earthy, but sweet-fruited, with a tense, concentrated core.
An iron-earth, peaty, dried-herb layer sits alongside the pure, rich fruit, amid a cocooning texture. Acidity is vibrant and offset by svelte, complex tannins – everything seems to have its counterpart and balance. Powerful. Towards the sumptuous finish is a sense of coming together, as the elements converge and branch out further. 96pts.
The wine, opened on one night, decanted and enjoyed – but, then developed, bloomed and was at its peak on the second day.
Great review. This is my favourite red wine from New Zealand.
