2020 was an exceptional vintage in Hawke’s Bay, characterised by a long, hot, dry season with 1,362 Growing Degree Days – compared with a long-term average of approximately 1,304. The only impact was the challenges around Covid 19 Lockdowns which began just as harvest was starting which might explain why only 20% was hand-harvested. The fruit from the Gimblett Gravels is a blend of 69% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot. It was de-stemmed prior to fermentation in stainless steel tanks and aged for 17 months in oak (20% new). Sealed with screw cap. In the glass it is a deep opaque ruby. Blackcurrant, blackberry, cassis with background charred oak are the primary aromas on the nose, with background floral notes of chrysanthemum and iris. Medium tannins with dense, concentrated black fruit with blackberry being the predominant flavour. The acidity is fresh and lacy with a medium length finish. Still tight and concentrated with many years ahead, and would recommend a good decant prior – if drinking now – otherwise would look to age for 5-8 years at least. 90pts
