Although The ‘Tere’ is a top tier ‘icon’ from Askerne – the Estate Syrah trumped this particular wine for me at the visit to the Cellar Door in December, so I was very keen to get to taste it again, ahead of it’s official release in the not too distant future.
An inky, impenetrable dark shade of red in the glass. Perfumed with appetising dark fruits – cherry, black doris plum, liquorice, date and vanilla pod. Structured and quite tight with some sinewy tannin and a current of acidity that’s still finding their balance. Saturated palate that drips with ripe dark fruit and then notes of Campari, cola and cardamom, dried lime, with a little white pepper. A juicy succulence to the long, flowing finish. 94pts.
A little chaotic but really interesting – compelling, complex drinking and a real ‘take your time’ wine. Needs more cellar years, and a chance to shine later down the line, but as a footnote – I decanted the wine and it was hugely improved after 24 hours.
