Following an excellent tasting of the Tupari ‘Boulder Rows’ Sav a few weeks ago, now it is the turn of the ‘regular’ Sauvignon Blanc from the Awatere Valley in Marlborough. Vibrant and palest lemon yellow in the glass, with a heady perfume of passion fruit, peach and freshly cut grass. Crisp and focussed on the palette, with hints of nectarine, melon sitting happily alongside greener flavours of apple and capsicum. Complex and balanced – a lively acidity gives it real drive, and there’s also a quartzy minerality to discover. Noticeable about this, for a Sav, is the texture – much softer and creamier than many from the region. Helped no doubt by the mellowing of a couple of years in bottle – I do love what a year or two of bottle age does to a good Marlborough Savvy. The finish is clean, ripe and lingering. 93pts.
