CJ Pask is a pioneer in the Gimblett Gravels sub-region of Hawke’s Bay, with 90 hectares of vines in the area. This wine was made by Kate Radburnd – one of NZ’s winemaking legends who now has her own label. The “Declaration” tier is Pask’s top tier and is only produced during exceptional vintages when the fruit quality is considered to be outstanding. A deep, inky purple colour in the glass. A vibrant, rich perfume of boysenberry, cherry, blackcurrant and plum fruits with peppercorn, toasted spices and salami. Densely concentrated in the palate, with some smoky but also sweet vanilla notes of barrel. The tannin is fine and dry, with a slight gravelly drag. Acidity sits back, with just enough push to keep everything turning. Secondary notes of old leather and mushroom arrive at the back of the palate, bringing more savoury flavours of olive and nori to play. Finishes well, with a balance of sweetly ripe fruit and dry tannin. 93pts
