On the heels of 2013, the 2014 vintage was warm, dry and widely regarded as excellent. 18 months in oak – 35% new. Under cork – in pristine condition. A deep, opaque purple-ruby colour in the glass. Firm and grippy tannins lend lots of structure, and while this Gimblett Gravels fruit is 100% de-stemmed, there is an aromatic and flavour profile that has a stalkiness that I usually associate with some whole bunch. This is probably the most Châteauneuf-du-Pape like NZ wine I have had. Savoury with an earthy complexity and background notes of cardamon, nutmeg and clove. Has a lifted freshness and acidity that cuts through the density. Benefits from exposure to air – so recommend an extended decant which reveals an even more ethereal, exciting dimension. 94pts
